The Inside Story XXVI (Crossing that river)

[GRE] Στο πρώτο μου αγώνα για το Πανελλήνιο, το Μάη του 2006 στον Πύργο. Είχα πάει ολομόναχος από Ζάκυνθο, με χορηγία το Vitara του ντάντι και δανεικό χειροποίητο τρέιλερ από πίσω άξονα αγροτικού. Δεν ήξερα κανέναν στα paddock. Με τα πολλά βρήκα γνωστό γνωστού το Γιώργο Αντζού κι αποφασίσαμε να μείνουμε στο ίδιο δωμάτιο μάλιστα. Τι το ‘θελα τρομάρα μου. Από το ροχαλητό τρένου, δεν έκλεισα μάτι όλη νύχτα. Και την επόμενη μέρα, εκκίνηση. Χαλαρός σε γενικές γραμμές ήταν ο αγώνας. Χωρίς δύσκολα κομμάτια. Η πρώτη ειδική είχε βαθιά άμμο και ήθελε γκάζι και δύναμη στα χέρια, και στην Απλή είχε δύο ύπουλα περάσματα από ποτάμι. Στο ένα από αυτά πνίγηκε ο Κοινωνάς κι έχασε το πρωτάθλημα του 2006. Το άλλο είναι αυτό που βλέπετε. Δεν είχα περάσει πολλά ποτάμια μέχρι τότε, αλλά ακολούθησα την συμβουλή που πάντα σε τέτοιες περιπτώσεις πιάνει: “κλείνεις τα μάτια, κρατάς το γκάζι λίγο και σταθερά ανοικτό και σηκώνεσαι όρθιος”. Με τίποτα δεν κλείνεις το γκάζι και με τίποτα δεν το χουφτώνεις απότομα. Και τα δύο καταλήγουν σε μπανάκι. Και δούλεψε, πέρασα το ποτάμι, τρεις φορές μάλιστα και τερμάτισα, στο πρώτο Πανελλήνιο.

[ENG] That was my first race for the Greek Enduro Chamionship. Back in May 2006 at Pyrgos. It was close to my hometown in Zakynthos, so I decided to lend my dad’s Vitara along with a patented trailer, made of the back axle of a mini-van. I did not know anyone at the paddocks. Finally I saw a friend of a friend, Giorgos Antzous, and agreed to share the same room at the hotel. Bad idea! He was snoring like a train all night long. And the morning after that I had to race too. Things were not that hard, though. The race was quite easy, with no hard trails on the Liaison. There was a tricky Special Test on soft sand and a couple of deep river crossings. Giorgos Kinonas got his Husqvarna diving in one of them, losing an almost certain championship. And on the picture above I’m crossing the second hard one. Considering my experience was not that great back then, I just tried to follow that favourite advice given by all experienced riders: “to keep the throttle open, the body in a normal position and the eyes shut”. It worked. I crossed that river three times with no damages and managed to finish my first ever Championship race.
